SOMETHING NEW IN APARTMENT HOUSES

How a small allotment of 84ft by 54Ft may be utilised to the fullest possible advantage for residential building purposes is shown by the completion of a two-apartment house in Trent avenue, adjacent to the Kelsey-Yaralla Kindergarten. This building, shown in the accompanying photograph, is of single brick construction on the story-and-a-hali principle. Each apartment is entirely independent from the other, as, apart from the dividing fences outside, an llin soundproof and fireproof brick wall extends through the centre of the building from the ground level to close up under the roofing tiles. On the ground floor each apartment has a largo living room, bedroom, kit-

chen, hall, laundry, front and rear porches, w.c., cloak recess, fuel storage, etc., while on the top floor there arc provided two bedrooms, bathroom, two large built-in clothes cupboards, linen press, etc., to each. Heavy beamed ceilings exist in each living room, and the balls are tastefully panelled. The steep pitched roof, covered with Abbotsford clay tiles and broken up with dormer windows here anil there, is further improved by the addition of hell-eastcd eaves. The flush gables, tall chimneys, and diamond leaded-light windows add still further to the attractive appearance of this modern residence, ft is safe to say that veryfew of the many people who have seen ibis building realise it is not a single residence but two entirely self-con-tained five-roomed houses under one roof.

The apartments are fitted with independent gas, electrical, hot and cold water, and drainage services. The entire hot and cold water installations are carried out in copper pipe and fittings. Hot water is obtained from the" last hot-storage dual systems. Gas coppers are provided in the laundries, while cooking is catered for hv an enamelled combination gas cooker and destructor in each kitchen. Altogether, the building represents a distinct change and advance in apartment house design, and certainly it is one which would lend character and attractiveness to any surroundings. The building, which cost approximately £l.7oo'was carried out for Mr William Casey by Messrs O’Sullivan and Bailone, contractors. who worked to the plans and specifications of Air Gorton R. Stone.
