NEW METHOD OF MINING

SCHEME UNDER CONSIDERATION [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, July 31. The Chairman of Directors of the Grey Valley Collieries, discussing the working of the Dobson mine, said that the work of sealing off the east section (where an explosion occurred on January 5) was commenced on Monday. The work would run well into four figures, and would employ about 120 men for several weeks. At the end of that time it was anticipated that coal production would be resumed. Tjie extractable quantity would he limited, however, by the iact that walking could not he proceeded with m future on the basis on which it had been in the past. In this connection the company’s colliery manager had recommended a method of mining new to New Zealand, which he claimed would allow the complete extraction of pillar coal with safety. This scheme was now under consideration.
