SALVATION ARMY

JUBILEE AT BALCtUTHA During the week-end the local Sal* vation Army Corps held, a series of special services to celebrate the jubilee of its work in Balclutha. Oh January; 26 and 27, 1884, the Salvation Army made its first appearance locally with! services conducted in the Woods Hall by Captain Matthews, Captain Ella M'Millan, Lieutenant Annie Teasdale, and Bandmaster Tucker. TJie meetings were well attended, and marked th« commencement of fifty years of valuable service to the town and district.The corps is at present in charge of Captain and Sister B. Stone; who have been so successful in their work that their term has been extended on several occasions since their arrival in' 1929. The present Salvation Army Hall was erected in 1888, and at first it was the officers’ quarters as well as the meeting place.

The celebrations commenced on, Saturday with a welcome to Colonel Osbourne, chief secretary for New Zealand, Staff Captain Nelson, divisional secretary,- Dunedin. _ In the evening and on Sunday meetings, both indoop and in the open air, were conducted,Last night the' celebrations concluded with a jubilee tea, which was followed by a concert, at which local member* gave reminiscent speeches.
