PORT CHALMERS QUEEN CARNIVAL
The rousing music of the pipers, supplemented by that of the Marino Band* gave a touch of gay revelry to the. pageantry of the regatta gymkhana at Port Chalmers on Saturday afternoon. The colourful procession started from King Edward square, passed' along the; main street which was lined with sight-* seers, and made its .way to the children’s playground, where swings, see* saws, and merry-go-rounds ' were pro* vided for juvenile amusement. The gymkhana procession was headed by the Dunedin Pipe’Band and the Port Chalmers Marine Band, the latter being recently. equipped with silver instruments. Then followed . gay figures inj fancy dress, decorated bicycles, and other bright outfits, ending with a; four-oared rowing skiff in regatta colours. ,
Particularly noticeable was a fishing flattie with nets and other equipment, including a large fishing hook baited for shark or sea serpent. The crew; of four boys was cleverly made up aa veteran fishermen, even to sou’-westera and clay pipes. One of the' “ venerable ” fishermen had evidently lost hi* .sou’-wester in a squall, for he had resourcefully utilised a sock as a head covering. Various games' and sideshows on the ground made the afternoon pass pleasantly.
Mr W. J. Wilson,_ chairman of the Regatta Committee, in a brief address thanked the people for turning out that afternoon, and also acknowledged indebtedness for their support generally! in connection with the various measures being taken to finance -the jubilee regatta. Mr Wilson also thanked thei bands for. turning out, and referred to the good work being done, by the three queen committees.
