WATER POLO

A GRADE COMPETITION Dunedin A, the undefeated champion team, had a very close and interesting game with Kiwi A in the first match of the second series (second round) matches of the A grade water polo competition at the Municipal Baths on Saturday night, Dunedin running out winners by 3 goals to 2 after leading 3-0 in the first spell. The teams were Dunedin—P. W. Harkess, D. Newall, J. 0. Byrnes, C. Elliott, B. Kerr, S. Jarvis, and J. D. O’Driscoll. Kiwi A—D. Pickard, A. Thomas, B. Geddes, D. Duff, P. E. Mathieson, M. Taylor, and W. A. Black. Soon after the start S. Jarvis attempted to goal, but Pickard saved well. After a little loose play Jarvis had another attempt and was successful with a long shot. Dunedin 1, Kiwi 0. Play was going up and down, but the ball was thrown to O’Driscoll, who goaled from halfw r ay. Dunedin 2, Kiwi 0. Dunedin were showing the better combination, and Jarvis again goaled with a great throw. Play was kept in the Kiwi half for a while, and then Kiwi attacked, Harkess coming right out of goal to prevent Thomas from having a sitting shot. Harkess saved well several times, and half-time was sounded with the scores: Dunedin A 3, Kiwi A 0. Dunedin attacked hard on resuming, but Kiwi soon shifted play to the other end after Piekard had saved hot shots from Jarvis and Newall. Thomas opened the score for Kiwi by swimming in close with the ball to put a short throw past Harkess. Dunedin A, 3, Kiwi A 1. Play was now very even, with both teams playing hard. _ Harkess was kept busy for a mew minutes, but was playing a very sound game and saved well in front from Thomas and Black. Kiwi were combining better at this stage, and Harkess was called on to save from two tight corners. Dunedin attacked, and Byrnes had two shots which missed. Taylor then obtained and threw to Thomas, who nut i n another shot, making the sco’c 3-2 in favour of Dunedin. The same player missed an easv shot a little later, and uhay became exciting in the closing the game ending;— Dunedin A 3 Kiwi A 2 Mr D. Bannatyne refereed.
