SWIMMING RECORDS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In the sporting columns of your paper on January 26 is mentioned the wonderful performance of a London youth, R. Gabrielson, fourteen years of age, who by his swimming 100yds iu 58 4-ssec won his place as the most' outstanding swimmer the world has eye? known. What I wish to convey is this:! We have just as wonderful a swimme# in New Zealand (S. Jarvis, Otago), still. . fourteen years of age, who has done the 100yds in 58sec, four-fifths of. a seconds better than the world’s wonder. Seeing what our sporting fraternity has don* in placing New Zealand on the map, I think it would be a pity tolet this boy* before he gets over the junior age, fade away without giving him an opportunity of cleaning up, if not the London world’s marvel, some of the Australian “cracks.” If the club or the centre to which he belongs is not in a position to finance a trip to Australia, I would suggest that a list beopened and subsidised' by the 'Government. If you are prepared to open the suggested list, I would be pleased to forward my modest 2s 6d as an opening subscription.—l am, etc., &.£!• Balclutha, January 27. .
