FIRE AT ST. CLAIR

MR CLEAVIN'S RESIDENCE 1 On Saturday night, at 11.50, the Fire Brigade was i called to a fire in Allandale road, St! Clair, It was at the residence of Mr F. W. Cleavin, manager of the New Zealand Wax Vesta Company. Nobody was at home at the time, the place having been locked up at 8 p.m. The fire had a firm hold when the brigade arrived, though the men and their gear got there promptly, but thanks to a copious supply of water the building was saved from the total destruction that threatened.. The house is of eight rooms, with brick walls. Four of the rooms were badly damaged, the roof was also damaged, and there is loss on the furniture, which would have been worse but for the firemen . spreading salvage sheets. The cause of the outbreak is not definitely ascertained, but as an.electric iron had been used before going out fori the evening it is thought that it might not have been turned off.

Mr Cleavin had the building insured; for £1,300 with the _ Standard Company. There was (no insurance on the furniture. '•
