SHEFFIELD SHIELD CRICKET

BRADMAN'S FIREWORKS BROWN'S BRILLIANT BATTING Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, January 26. In tho Sheffield Shield match against Victoria, which is the final game of the series, New South Wales requires an outright win to retain the shield. The weather vras ideal for the opening of the match. Ponsford was unable to play for Victoria. There was a record crowd of 32,000, and there was tremendous oxcitment, due to Don Bradman’s fireworks.

New South Wales, in their first innings, have lost two wickets for 445 (Fingloton retired hurt 78, W. Brown not out 187, Bradman 128, Kippax 44). Victoria’s bowl-ers—Fleetwood-Smith and Ebeling, both test possibilities, and M’Cormick and Ironmonger—were all severely punished, and the batsmen were on top the whole day.

Bradman hit four, sixes off FleetwoodSmith, three in one over, and was then caught, deliberately throwing away his wicket. Brown’s magnificent batting is regarded as certain , to ensure his inclusion m the test team. His cover drives and legside shots were perfectly timed. Woodfull was much impressed by his capacity as an opening batsman. This is the third occasion in Sheffield matches on which he has acquitted himself finely. Fingleton, too, batted like a champion. The test selectors witnessed the match, and will choose the test team next Wednesday- ■
