TOURISTS' MOTOR GARS
HEAVY DUTY PAYMENT la a recent issue we referred to the experience of an Australian visitor, a passenger by the Moncwai, who was called upon to deposit the sum of £270 with the Customs Department, as heavy dutv payment in accordance with the Customs regulations, for a motor car brought to Now Zealand, for the purpose of making a tour of the dominion. On the completion of the tour and the •shipment of tnc car from New Zealand the amount deposited would be refunded.
Our attention has been drawn to the fact that any accredited visitor may obtain from most of the insurance companies doing business in New Zealand lor a nominal premium a guarantee bond for the amount of the deposit required by the Customs Department, This obviates the necessity of depositing cash and thereby curtailing the visitor’s spending capacity. I It therefore behoves the Tourist Department to' fully acquaint overseas visitors to this effect so that their full spending power may be placed in circulation..
On the other hand, New Zealanders visiting Australia and taking their cars might be advised by tho Tourist Department to provide for a similar contingency on the other side by taking with them a letter of introduction to some accredited institution, ivhich would extend a similar concession on payment of a small premium. \
