She brought 172 passengers and 266 immigrants for Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington. • * * * Large fire in High street, Christchurch. The damage is estimated at £IO,OOO. Premises destroyed were occupied’ bv Alfred Simpson (bookseller), Church fdraper), Delamarc (grocer), and Smith (boot and shoe maker). Gibson, and Captain Scott. * .♦ * .* The Government has received a despatch from the Home Government to the effect that a supplementary charter has been issued granting and declaring that degrees in science conferred by the University of New Zealand shall be recognised as academical distinctions, and that awards of merit are entitled to rank in precedence and consideration in the United Kingdom and in British colonies and possessions. « * * • The first bowling match ever played between New Zealand and Australian players came off at the Dunedin Club’s green between teams representing the colony of Victoria and the Middle Island of New Zealand. The local teato was made up of play-ers belonging to nine different clubs in Dunedin, Christchurch, and the Otago country districts. The weather was favourable, it being, in fact,, almost the only’ fine day we have had since Christmas. Mr H. S. Fish, M.H.R., umpired for the Victorians and Dr Coughtrey for New Zealand. Four rinks were played. Scores: —New Zealand 99, Victoria 90.'
