BIRTHDAY OF MAORI "PROPHET"
CELEBRATIONS A r RATAHA VILLAGE UNION OF TRIBES [Per United Press Association.] WANGANUI, January 26. The sixty-first birthday celebrations of Wiremu it a tana, the Maori " prophet,” are in progress at Itatana village, where, there is a gathering of some J,OUU Natives. The celebrations this year are of more than usual importance by reason of the fact that the young Maori king, Koroki, with a retinue of 208 followers, is among the guests. Yesterday was occupied with speechmaking, and to-day a sports gatliering was held. It is stated that the visit of the king means a great deal, for it signifies a cementing of the tribes from the Waikato district with those in Wanganui and other parts of this coast. As one of the executive of the Rataua movement put it, “It,means the fulfilling of the statements of our forefathers that the Maori should bo as (.me family and not split up into various sections.
