MR H. G. WELLS
Mr H. 6. Wells is moving towards the allotted span. He was born in 1866. His father was a professional cricketer, and the youth started without any particular prospects in a draper’s shop. That was a sphere altogether too small for one of his abilities. He cast aside drapery at the age of 16, and became in turn schoolmaster, tutor, lecturer, and demonstrator. Then he began literary work, which was to be the medium for the revelation of his extraordinary abilities. His prophetic vision was in_ his early scientific romances, beginning with ‘ The Time Machine,’ in 1895. This was quickly followed by other imaginary nights of fancy. They met with instantaneous success, and since then Mr Wells has turned his restless and daring mind to many phases of human_ activity. His scientific romances still enjoy much popularity. Very appropriately, Messrs Victor Gollancz Ltd. have published a number of these in one volume. This book includes ‘ The Food of the Gods,’ 1 In the Days of the Comet,’ ‘ The Island of Dr Moreau,’ ‘ The War of the Worlds,’ ‘ The First Men in the Moon,' ‘ The Invisible Man,’ ‘ The Time Machine,’ and ‘ Men Like Gods.’ There is also a lively introduction by _Mr Wells himself. Those who are familiar with these imaginative ventures will be glad to obtain them printed in this form, and those who have not read them have a treat in store.
