SHEFFIELD PROGRESS Sheffield firms are still maintaining their place in the world as manufacturers of -steel, from which the vital parts of record breaking airplanes are made. Seventy , per cent, of the airplanes which competed in the King’s Cup race were fitted with cylinders made in that city, and the crankshaft, valves, and cylinders of Sir , Charles Kingsford-Smith’s machine, in which he made his record flight, from England to Australia, were also manufactured in Sheffield. A well-known American maker of bronze tubular castings has decided to transfer his works from the United States to Sheffield, where the firm will, in future, manufacture all its products for the British and export markets. It is intended to produce castings for the use of the paper making, shipbuilding, and other engineering industries, as well as for the textile and printing trades. The plant will be capable of casting tubes up to 4ft in diameter and thirty-five tons in weight. A combination of scissors manufacturers has been set up for the production of scissors on mass production lines by processes new to Sheffield. Previous stages of manufacture will be eliminated, and costs will be reduced below any level formerly attained. The English Steel Corporation have just completed three castings which will form the bed-plate of an electri-cally-driven hydraulic high . pressure ram pump for a 7,000 tons forging press. This pump will probably be the largest electrically-driven pump of its kind ever manufactured in any country. The making of the mould for these castings, which are extremely intricate, involved the use of seventy different types of cores, and demanded the exercise of the highest skill. The English Steel Corporation are expending a sum of £500,000 on the reorganisation of their Vickers Works, making a total up to date of £1,250,000. The money is to be devoted to the extension of the firm’s drop-stamp-ing plant, which is the largest in Britain, and to additional facilities for the heat treatment of special steels. These extensions indicate substantial confidence in the growing revival of commercial activity, and have no connection with the production of armaments. A locomotive weighbridge of a capacity up to 168 tons has recently been completed by the Sheffield firm of Messrs Charles Rose Ltd. It _is _ constructed on the most modern principles, and is believed to constitute an advance on anything of’ its kind previously produced.
