NOTES C*N THE RACING

[Special to the ‘ Stab.’] The Wallacevillc High-weight Handicap provided one of the closest final tussles of the meeting. Miss Hushabye acted as pacemaker to the straight entrance, where Prince Colossus took charge, with Korero, Nightguard, and Walton Park handy. The two lastnamed challenged the ’leader 100yds from the post, and at one stage Nightguard appeared likely to head Prince Colossus, but the latter bore out on him under pressure, and won by a neck. Walton Park finished strongly on the inside, and the judge declared a dead heat heat for second place between him and Nightguard. Korero was close up next, and then came Sam Smith and Melisande. * * * * Investors were fairly well on the mark in the Kaitoke Handicap, and another interesting race was staged. The early leaders were Lady Nan, Dombey, Royal Amphora, Highbrow, Debut, Pheon, and Hunting Lodge, and when the false rail was passed Highbrow was slightly in front from Lady Nan and Royal Amphora, with Dombey, Hunting Lodge, and Pheon in close attendance. Highbrow was in trouble inside the distance, and a prolonged tussle was tlven centred upon between the other leaders. Royal Amphora bad his head in front 50yds from the post, and, although subjected to severe challenges, held on to gain an impressive win by a neck from Hunting Lodge, who got up to beat Dombey on the post. Pheon, Sunny Maid, Lady Nan, and Highbrow wore next. * * * * The Hopeful Stakes was won hi a runaway fashion by the Wingatuitrained Dismiss, who, although not fast away, shot through at the entrance to the "course proper, and was first into the run home from Cup Bearer, Pin Money, Morbury, and Bodyline. Dismiss "drew away from this stage, and had three lengths to spare at the post from Morbury, who beat Pin Money almost ns comfortably. Cup Bearer was a fair fourth in front of Cape Lilock and Flaxen together. * * * * Sallspray was responsible for an outstanding display in winning the Melrose Handicap. He drew No. 1, and was one of the leaders for the first two furlongs, but liven gradually drifted hack, to be in the middle of the field. At the straight entrance Golden Chant was well .clear of Raparahara, Oriel, and Ralphyllis entering the straight, and the finish seemed to be likely to rest with this quartet, but nearing the post Saltspray shot through on the rails, and in a memorable finish got up to win by a short head from Raparahara, with a similar margin to Golden Chant. Ralphyllis was close up nexi. in front of Silk Sox. Oriel, Purse, High Grader, and Drumfire. « « • « The Summer Handicap was won by Ventrac from end to end. He took charge early from Lord Val, Milndi. Epigram, and Rocket, and the order rounding the far turn was Ventrac, Arikira. Lord Val and Rocket, with Reel Manfred moving up. Ventrac had a clear advantage from Arikira, Lord Val, Epigram. Tiger Gain, Rod Manfred, and Desert Star entering the straight, and streaked away in the straight, to win without much effort from' Arikira. tvhile Vertigern finished strongly to narrowly heat Desert Star for third money. Emigrant, Count Palatine, and Rocket headed the remainder.

The little-fancied Final Shot executed a sterling performance to win ihe Thorndon Handicap. She drew one of the inside mijrhles, and although drifting back over the early stages she was in a good position close to the leading division at the home turn and followed Ida Merling, Kanial Pasha, Farmer, and Courtyard into the straight. Ida Merling was done with at the distance, and Farmer and Courtyard, and then Final Shot became prominent. In an exciting tussle Final Shot drew out in the last few strides to gain a half-length verdict from Farmer, who held oft’ the fastfinisliing Revision to bent her by a neck. Courtyard was close up next, and was followed by Kama! Pasha, Courtyard, Lady Spy,‘and Speed, with Argentic last. • • • • Silver Ring was sent out a staunch favourite for the City Handicap, and he scored another brilliant victory. He was not at all prominent until well down the running, and his chance inside the distance when he was in sixth place and a good way hack did not look very hopeful. At this stage Pomp, Golden Wings, and Copyist were practically on terms and the winner was looked lor from this trio. Copyist had his head in trout of them st)yds from the post, and his success seemed assured until Silver Ring dashed up on the outside and with out* of the most sensational finishing runs seen on the course for a long time he got in the deciding stride to beat Copyist by a head. Golden Wings was only a neck away clear of Pomp, with Cranford, SilverStreak, Guarantee, and Lordly Knight next. • • • ■ The tour top weights in the Kelburn Handicap fought out a close finish. Royal Dash acted as pacemaker from the early stages and led at the straight from Hunting Bag, Limbohm, and Wild Sky. These were in a bunch commencing the run for home, but inside the distance Lone Raider showed out, and Davolo, who had come from a rear position, also became prominent wide out. Davolo made a game effort, but Lone Raider had too much reserve and won fairly comfortably from Davolo, who similarly beat the fast-finishing Limbohin. Senior was close up next in front of Hunting Bag, Pladie, and Water Polo.
