(Received January 24, at 1.30 p.m.) Mr Hector By water, writing in the ‘Daily Telegraph,’ says: “Upon the admirals at the Singapore Conference devolves the responsibility of defending British interests in the Pacific, in case of need no capital ships can arrive on the scene for some weeks, as Malta is 6,000 miles distant. Meanwhile Singapore is practically defenceless.”
