GOLD-BEARING COUNTRY
GEOPHYSIC SURVEY DETERMINATION ACCURACY DEMONSTRATED TO MR FORBES [Special to the Star.] PEMBROKE, January 20. The remarkable accuracy _of the geophysic survey in determining gold bearing country was demonstrated to the Prime Minister (Right Hon. G. W. Forbes) at Bendigo this afternoon, when, to show the Prime Minister the methods used, Dr Ma.rsden (Director of Scientific and Industrial Research) completed a survey which, had already been started. ' Since the survey was commenced at Cromwell a year ago, several areas have been dealt with by this method, and the results to. date have been most encouraging, gold having been found in every instance. It was pointed out to the Prime Minister by Dr Marsden that if the whole of the Otago and Southland goldfields were subjected to a survey of this nature, it would be possible to establish the gold industry on a new basis, for it would then be a matter of offering gold country for lease on definite terms, with an assurance to investors that there was gold there. Thus; companies of a largo size could be formed to work the areas on • an industrial basis. It had already been proved that virtually the whole of “ easy ” gold had been taken out by the old-time miners, and the future of the industry depends on locating hidden gold-bearing, channels. This can be done by geophysio survey and, if mining on a big scale were : developed, employment could be found for several thousand men. \ , The Prime Minister, who . includes research among his portfolios, was (keely interested in the scheme outlined by Dr Marsden.
