PROMISES CARRIED OUT
MR MACDONALD ADDRESSES CONSTITUENTS GOVERNMENT'S RECORD REVIEWED (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. RUGBY, January 18. (Received January 19, at noon.) The Prime Minister addressed a large meeting when he visited his constituency of Seaham Harbour. His speech was devoted exclusively to domestic affairs, with particular reference to the Unemployment Bill now before Parliament. He pointed out that among other features the Bill increased the insurance period, beginning with those who had good insurance. Referring to the Government’s record, Mr MacDonald said its action was directed to placing the country on a secure financial foundation. He emphasised that social welfare was only to be obtained through sound finance. It had laid good foundations and could f-ace the future with confidence. He pointed out that there were more men and women at work now than had been for the last seven or eight years. Two years ago he pledged himself to be untiring in his efforts to reduce unemployment, increase trade, balance the Budget, to make the country’s finances sound, and to spread security and confidence among the people. He claimed that this had been done and that the first stage of the Government’s work had been accomplished.
