Imperial official and social circles are delighted that Prince Georg© is going to Australia, and prophesy that his prepossessing appearance, ease of manner, and- social chirm, which his increased sense of responsibility in recent years has not in any way impaired, will ensure him fascinating popularity among the younger set in every State visited, quite apart from older people’s appreciation of the signal significance of the Royal compliment to Australia at so important »' juncture in its history. It is recalled that when it was suggested in 1931 that Prince George might Visit Australia to open the Sydney bridge it was even then suggested that he had an idea of going to New Zealand, because a hint was dropped to that ’ effect at a dinner to visiting cricketers. •Sir' Thomas Wilford, who was questioned on the point at the time, ’said: ■“ I had compared notes with the Prince before the latter made his speech, and learned that he intended to f express a desire to visit New Zealand, whither I had .intended to invite him. We would ho delighted to have him.” Interesting speculation is current whether the King will confer a title on Prince George before his visit or after his return. VALUE OF PERSONAL CONTACT LONDON, January 17. * The Times,’ in an editorial, says: f‘ The Royal visit to Australia stresses the leading part played by Victoria in the history of the Commonwealth.” It adds: “ Prince George, following in the footsteps of his father and brothers, the l Prince of Wales and Duke of York, will he welcomed with the same loyal enthusiasm. These visits not merely gave pleasure to the whole population; they did' lasting good in confirming by personal contact the allegiance to the common Crown, which is the connecting link of the whole Empire.” The editorial asks: “ Might not this be a suitable occasion to revive the former arrangement under which the' two navies interchanged cruisers, to great mutual advantage? Might not the cruiser / .which takes out Prince George remain for sis months or a year in Australia, and the Australian ship which brings Kim back be attached for the same period to the British fleet?” MELBOURNE ARRANGEMENTS • January 17. • The Prince’s arrival is expected about October 16,. two days before the opening of. the Centenary Royal Agricultural Show*. His itinerary includes his attendance at big race meetings,- a trade ■ exhibition,: a horticultural show, children’s display, Ballarat band contest, centenary air race, finish, dedication of the Shrine of Remembrance, which is fixed for November 11, and a naval, •military, and Air Force tattoo on the - following- day. A Henley carnival will faa held on the Yarra on November 25. , : The Prince will be the guest of the new Governor, Lord Huntingfield, during his visit. ' Prince'George leaves England on Friday on his tour oif South Africa and Rhodesia, Later in the year he will visit Australia. The Prince returned to London last night after visiting Sandringham to say. good-bye to the King . and Queen. ' To-day he is going to the Prince of Wales’s house at Sunningdale, and on Friday will fly or motor from there to Southampton, where he will embark. He will roach Cape Town on February 5, and is expected home again at the end of April. , .
