BROADCASTING.

TO THE EUITOE. Sir,—Last night 4ZM was operating on a frequency of 1,045 k.c. 4ZF was operating on its assigned frequency of 1,220 k.c. The difference is 175 k.c. 4ZF was' putting on' a fairly enjoyable programme. Its volume, considering power, was all that could be desired, its QRI, through no fault of the transmitter, left much to be wished for. The trouble, so far as reception in this locality (Port Chalmers) was concerned lay in the fact that two or three superheterodyne receivers, which transmit oscillator carrier waves, were tuned to 4ZM. The consequence was that listeners here who wanted to listen to 4ZF had their reception spoiled by the heterodyne from these carrjers. A year or so ago not more than four of the offending receivers were in operation here, and reception was fairly good. To-day there are more of them than I can estimate, and reception is fast approaching the point where 1 would not advise a friend to speculate in a receiver. In fairness to the persons operating the sets referred to, it must not be taken for granted that they are aware of the trouble they are creating. The responsibility is entirety with the vendor of the receiver. I think the time has arrived when radio

dealers in their own interests, even if they are not concerned with what is rightly the function of the Post and Telegraph Department, took some action in this matter.—l am, etc., Jas. Bain. January 18.
