EDUCATION IN OTAGO

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING The Education Board’s first monthly meeting of the year was held this morning, the following members being present:—Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), D. C. Cameron, W. Cooper, R. H. Todd, W. R. Brugh, D. T. Fleming, J. Shephard, R. Jl‘Kinlay, E. Morgan, and G. Livingstone. CAVERSHAM SCHOOL. The Education Department,, in acknowledging the board’s letter regarding the school accommodation at Caversham, stated that the question whether it was preferable to maintain the present old buildings or build a new school to accommodate the infant department was receiving consideration. The depkrtment’s communication was noted, and the board decided to advise the department that it regarded the matter as one of some urgency. PUKEMA. . As regards Pukema, the department wrote agreeing that it would be as well to retain the buildings for, say, another two years. • The communication was noted, and it was resolved to refer, it to the district members, the secretary of the board to act after receiving their report. OWAKA RESIDENCE. The department wrote agreeing to the board’s proposal to place the teacher’s residence at Owaka on the market with a view to ascertaining whether there were any purchasers for the property. WESTON MEMORIAL GATES. A request was received from Weston that the board’s grant of £5 towards the memorial gates be increased to £lO. The board decided to increase the grant to £7 10s. HIGH SCHOOLS’ BOARD. Messrs D. T. Fleming and W. R. Brugh were reappointed as the board’s representatives on the Otago High Schools’ Board. TERMS AND VACATIONS. The department wrote stating that owing to the late commencement of the school year (Tuesday, February C) it would not be possible to have a minimum school year of 400 half-days, and that it would appear necessary during 1934 for schools to commence the terms on the Monday instead of on the Tuesday as proposed. Should this be adopted there would be a margin of one day on which a special holiday might be granted. It did not appear possible this year for any education district to allot the full three days for special occasions. It was decided that the Otago schools should open on Tuesday, February 6, and on the Monday at the commencement of the next two terms. It was also resolved to ask school committees to curtail special holidays as far as possible. RESIGNATIONS.
