MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING At the monthly meeting of the M cst Harbour Borough 'Council the imnoi (Mr T. H. Harriclge) presided over Crs Smith, .Hedgers, Haywood, Venn, Kay, Forgio, George, 'J’aylor, and Robb. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that during the month £2,92i 10s id had been eolloeted. When current accounts amounting to £212 15s 2d were paid, the credit balance would he £1,063 bs Sd. COR H ESI’ON D ENCE. Mr H, L. Mainland asked permission to use the unoccupied portion of his house as a factory for the manufacture of animal traps under the Factory Act. —The application was approved subject to the proposal complying with the Health Department’s regulations. Mr •). T. King drew attention to an ■ offensive smell arising irom a drain outside his property.—The matter was referred to the health inspector. The Marine Department advised that it was proposed, at an early date, to call a conference of representatives of the Harbours’ Association, Municipal Association, and Government Departments interested.with a view to finding a satisfactory solution to the problem arising from the municipal authorities’ objection to the Harbours Amendment Bill. 1933. Mr J. W. Munro. M.P., forwarded a letter which he had received from the Minister of Employment, following an interview Mr. F. Jones, M.P.; and he had with him, in connection with the letter from the Mayor of West Harbour, complaining of allocations under the Unemployment Board’s No. 5 scheme. He made no comment except that the Minister was absolutely hopeless.—lt was dcceided to thank Mr Munro for his efforts on behalf of the borough. TENDERS ACCEPTED. The tenders of the New Zealand Highway Construction Ltd. for contracts No. 3 and 4 in connection with the Port Chaimers-Dunedin highway were approved. The prices were £796 5s (No. 3) and £385 13s 9d (No. 4). INSPECTOR’S REPORT. .

The Inspector reported that the following work had been done during the month ended January 16;—The grader had been kept on the main road nearly all the time to keep it in good order for the tar sealing. Repairs had been carried out on Junction' road. The tarsealed portion on the main road was top-dressed. Cleaning up of streets was continued at Roseneath, Burkes, and Bavensbonrne. The following work had been proceeded with;—Point at Sullivan’s. District road, Harbour terrace, Montague street, and Athol place. The Main road near Burkes was altered and had made a vast improvement. The following work remained to be done: —Stop rail in Ross streetdrains on the Main road at Sullivan’s, Ascog road, Burkes. .Tunnel Hill, and Wilsons: repair to the culvert at Rayensbonrne near the Recreation Grounds: Sullivan’s corner widened: repair the concrete channel on the Main road at Horan’s and the completion of Castle street.

A recommendation from the Works Committee that the corner at BayView terrace and Main road be graded and tar-sealed for approximately two chains was approved, it being stated that the cost would be in the vicinity of £9. , ,
