A FALL OF GRAVEL

ONE MAN KILLED; ANOTHER INJURED [Per United Press Association'.] INVERCARGILL, January 16. One man was killed instantaneously and another was extensively injured about 12.30 p.m. to-day when a fall of gravel occurred in a pit where they were working at Otatara. The victim of the accident was Alexander Morton, a single man, aged about forty years. Some twelve yards of gravel fell at once, and the force of the impact knocked them violently against a motor lorry which was standing in the pit, with the result that his head was smashed. The lorry itself was also totally engulfed in the slip. ’ The deceased’s companion was William Withington, jun., a single man, aged 19 years. He was working near Morton, but escaped the full force of the fall. His injuries, however, are fairly extensive and he was conveyed to the Southland Hospital, where an X-rav examination took place. His condition was reported this evening to be quite satisfactory.
