SURF LIFE SAVING

The monthly meeting of the Otago District Committee of the New Zealand Life Saving Association was held in St. Clair Club’s pavilion last evening, present: Mr E. L. Macassey (in the chair), Messrs R. Baker, A. Idour (St. Kilda), J. M. Rogerson (Oreti), H. D. Gillies, J. Swan (St. Clair), J. Perira, I. L. Turnbull (treasurer), and D. B. Christopher (hon. sec.). _ . The application of the St. Clair Club to hold its annual competition with the Sumner Club (Christchurch) was approved. The Oreti Club wrote submitting the date and officials for its forthcoming competition for the Kingsland Memorial Shield, and same were granted. The Secretary read several letters from the Oreti Club re the generous action of the Southland Sports Trust in donating a trophy for the Otago six-man ' championships. The trophy was granted on the condition that the first competition he held at Invercargill. —lt was unanimously decided that the trophy be accepted, and that the championship be held at Oreti Beach on Sunday, February 11. Mr Perira emphasised the want of stretchers on the principal beaches, and it was decided , to approach both the St. Clair and St. Kilda Improvement Societies in an endeavour to obtain their co-operation in procuring same. The Chairman thanked the St. Clair Club for its action in organising a gala day for Sunday next, in order to raise money to augment the funds of the association. . Following teams from St. Clair Life Saving Club will give an exhibition on Sundav. at St Clair Beach, at 2.30: —No. I: AV. J. Jarvis. R. Geddes, H. Devlin. C. Gladwin, C. Gore, J. Swan, No. 2: H. Tyrie. C. Durand. R. Smith, M. Rodgerson, AA 7 . M'Allen. T. Hay. Canoe races will also be held during the afternoon. The crews are:—No. 1: C. Gore, D. Christopher, H. Gillies, O. Lewis. No. 2; H. James. No. 3: J. Swan and J. Faulks. No. 4: V. Alclous. No.'S: C. Eckhbld. No. 6: H. Devlin and P. Mathieson.
