HIGHWAYS BOARD
SOUTH ISLAND TOUR 2,000-MILE ITINERARY [Special to the Stab.] WELLINGTON, January 15. In a twelve-day tour of the South Island, commencing next Thursday, members and officers of the Main Highways Board will cover nearly 2,000 miles of road and meet a large number of local bodies and representatives of the motoring organisations. The party will comprise Messrs C. J. M’Kenzie (chairman), John .Wood (Government member of the board), M. H. Wynyard, C. J, Talbot, and W. Morrison (representatives of the Counties’ Association), A. Tyndall (engineer),, and G. W. Knapp (secretary). A . The board makes a thorough tour or the North and South Islands each alternate year. It is now the turn of the South Island, but the coming tour will not include the most northern ’portion, this being left until later in the summer. The itinerary will be as follows: Friday, January 19.—Christchurch, from' 9 a;m. until noon, meet local bodies between Waimakariri and Rakaia and the Canterbury Automobile Association... Leave in afternoon for Akaroa and consult with representatives of Wairewa County. , Saturday, January 20.—Leave Christchurch for Fairlie, where Mackenzie County representatives will be met. Reach the Hermitage in the evening. Sunday, January 21.—Leave the Hermitage for .Queenstown via Omarama. , Monday, January 22.—Meet deputations at Queenstown in morning; meet Arrowtown Borough at 10.12 a.m., Cromwell . Borough at noon, Vincent County at Clyde at 2.30 p.m., Alexandra Borough at 3.45, ana reach Roxburgh in the evening. Tuesday, January 23, will be devoted to inspections and interviews at Roxburgh, Rae’s Junction, Tapanui, Gore, Mataura, Wyndham, and Invercargill, where at 7 p.m. the board will meet the Invercargill City Council, Southland County, Bluff, South Invercargill, and Winton Boroughs, and the Southland Motor Association at the county office. Wednesday, January 24, will be devoted to visits to Riverton, Orepuki, Tuatapere, Otautau, Nightcaps, via Mahapouri to Te^Anau. Thursday, January 25, will be mainly occupied in an inspection of the new road to the Sounds at Cascade Creek, the board returning to Gore via Lumsden.
Friday, January 26.—Itinerary is Gore, Balclutha, Milton, Mosgiel, to Dunedin. The board will meet a number of local organisations in Dunedin on Saturday, and will leave on Sunday for Ranfurly, returning to Dunedin via the Rock and Pillar route through Middlemarch. Monday, January 29, involves a series of deputations at Waikouaiti, Palmerston, Oamaru, Waimate, and Timaru.
Tuesday, January 30, will be devoted to a, route from Timaru to Temuka, and inspection of the proposed Rangitate deviation, visits to Geraldine and Ashburton, reaching Christchurch in time to connect with the express steamer service for the North Island.
