GRANITE COMING TO HAND STEEL EXFECTED ON SITE IN FEBRUARY Mr James Fletcher, who has returned from the granite quarries at the Bluff, advised a ‘Star’ reporter this morning that the first four truck loads of . sawn granite nave beep shipped, and that this stone is now, being unloaded at the Fletcher Construction Company’s works—the old cement works—at Pelichet Bay. _ “ Four gang saws are .now is full operation at the quarries,” said Mr Fletcher, “ and within a week the company expects to get the whole . of the plant in full operation for the finishing of the stone in- Dunedin.” With reference to the quality and quantity of the granite, Sir Fletcher said that the quarry had opened up exceptionally well, and the length andl size of the stone were only -governed hy the cranes handling • them. The stone for the State Fire Insurance building in Christchuch was now-being shipped from the Bluff , for the’Christchurch contractors (Moore Bros.). In regard to the steel, Mr Fletcher said that the first two shipments had arrived at Fort Chalmers and the third 1 shipment of 250 tons was ■ due bn the Huntingdon. Messrs Stevenson and Cook have completed their workshops, and a start has now been made for the fabricating of the steel. The contractors anticipate that the first delivery of steel to the Post Office site will be* made early in February.
