SUCCESSFUL EVENING SPORTS

SCRATCH RAGING COMPETITION J. J. MORRIS SHOWS FORM t The Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association staged a most successful evening meeting at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday night, the programme comprising A and B grade scratch events, two cycling handicaps, and a couple of run-, uing handicaps. A good crowd of spectators saw some enjoyable running and cycling, corapetion being made all the keener by the presence of a team of athletes and cyclists from Milton. The field events, however, provided disappointing competition, and the standard in the high jump vas very low indeed. One ot the features of the evening was the fine form shown by J. .I.,Morris (Caversham) in winning the threemile scratch event in mo#t convincing fashion in lornin 39 l-ssec, J. G. Barnes (New Zealand one-mile champion) being 120yds back second. Barnes/who is not nearly so far forward in his training as at this time last year, also had his colours lowered in the half-mile A grade event by the consistent and promising Baptist Runner, I. Craig. 15. Fish, the Invercargill sprinter, won the 220yds A grade final fairly comfortably. Anglican No. 1 team won the relay handicap, due in no small measure to a brilliant quarter by A. L. Price. Both cycling events were won by .1. Brown, of Milton. ■ The B grade scratch races also provided good competition, and though here, too, the field events did not attract very large entries, the standard was higher comparatively than it was in the A grade.
