VISITORS ENTERTAINED There was a large attendance at the Town Hall on Saturday night, when the : visiting bowlers were entertained at a concert and social. The president of the New Zealand Bowling Council (Mr H. Rowley) presided, and associated with him’ on the platform were other members of the council and their wives, the Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox),-and Mrs Cox. ‘ ■ .1 ,

At the opening of the proceedings'Mr H; B. Oakey, of Christchurch, a;member of the council, presented Mrs Rowley with a bouquet_ from the visiting bowlers in appreciation of . the hospitality. that had been, extended to them during their stay in Dunedin., Mr Rowley replied briefly amidst applause. ' . ‘The Chairman, in his opening remarks, mentioned the fact that at the last annual meeting of the New Zealand Council it had been decided to present commemorative badges'to bowlers who had won'any of the various competitions at the New Zealand tournaments, and he was very pleased to see that many of those who had qualified for the badges were present that night. Foremost among them was Professor Maxwell Walker, of Auckland, who had had five wins—a particularly fine. record—and there were also Mr E. Harraway,. of Dunedin, and Mr J. Brackenridge, of Wellington, who had had wins in the singles, pairs, and rinks. Another who had achieved considerable success at the annual;tournaments was Mr J. Best, of Dunedin. He was also glad to see present .Mr. W. Carswell, the veteran Taieri bowler, who had played such a .magnificent t game in the semi-final of the singles tournament during the week, and he wished to welcome Mr Hall, manager of the Australian team. MiHall was a, member of the Queensland Bowling Association, and had brought with him the good wishes of that body for similar. • organisations in New Zealand. The dominion bowlers were somewhat disappointed that the Australians had not brought their best team over, this being duo principally to the fact that the Adelaide tournament jvas being held in March, but they were very much obliged to the fourteen players who had come. . (Applause.) The Mayor, welcoming the visitors to Dunedin, emphasised the fact that the people of Dunedin took a great deal of interest in sport, and were utilising the services of unemployed men to prepare sports grounds which , would be a benefit to the community in days to come. The Mayor enlnrced on the attractions that Dunedin and its surroundings had to offer, and urged the visitors to see all of these that they possibly could during

spirit that existed in bowling, which he described as the best; game in the world, and concluded with a hope that the visitors would thoroughly enjoy the time they spent in the city. Mr Hall, replying on behalf of the Australian team, said they were overwhelmed with the. warmth of the welcome they' had received in Dunedin. Since coming here, ho Said, they had had a very enjoyable ' time, and had made many friends. He was sorry that their number, was not greater, but for various reasons, a good many bowlers had been prevented from': coming to New Zealand;., Mr Hall referred to the playvof.MriW; Carswell/which, he said, was marvellous for its consistency, and he wondered how anybody; could possibly beat him. The general standard of the game in New Zealand, he had found, was very high, and even’ if Australia’s best team , had come across he thought it would not take back-much in the way of honours.

Mr H. Mayer, replying on behalf of the Wellington Centre, .deplored the fact that so, few players had made the trip from the capital city. He congratulated the executive of; the Dunedin Centre on the manner in which the tournament was being conducted, and referred appreciatively to the assistance rendered at the various ’greens by the Indies who looked after the refreshments.

Mr H. B. Oakoy replied for the Canterbury players. After 'Community singing had been led by Mr C. Mustbn, of Auckland, assisted by Miss Bertha Rawlinsbn, the following programme was provided;— Tenor solo, Mr R. A. Mitchell; violin solo, .Mr Maitland M'Cutcheon ; contralto solo, Miss Bertha Rawlinson; male quartet—Messrs R. A. Mitchell, R. W. Dunbar, G. S.'Salmond, and J. A. Haggitt; recitation, Mr Lester Holier ; soprano solo, Miss Evelyn Shepard; baritone solo, Mr G. _ S._ Salmond; humorous items and recitation, Professor Maxwell Walker. At the conclusion of the concert programme supper was served MOTOR EXCURSION About 600 bowlers and their wives took part in the motor excursion which was arranged yesterday afternoon for their entertainment. The visitors were carried in five large buses and about 100 private cars through Wakari and around Flagstaff, down to Whare Flat, across the Taieri Plain, and back to Wingatui, where afternoon tea was provided at the racecourse.
