TO FIND DROWNED BODY

STRANGE TRIAL WITH DIVINING TWIG [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, January 15. Some excitement was caused on North Beach yesterday afternoon by the efforts of a man named Archibald Small, who claims divining powers, to locate the body of H. J. Freeman, who was drowned last Thursday. He produced his forked twig and it began to work.- The twig flicked down and pointed almost directly out to sea, while from other -points along the shore the fork swung round to point in the same direction. , .. A big crowd gathered, and Small was offered the use of a catamaran. He ’changed into bathing costume arid set out into the surf with two members of the Surf Club propejling the catamaran by paddling. The breakers caught the craft, however, and swept it rapidly inshore, with Small clinging tightly. The effort was then .abandoned.
