TAMAROA THROUGH PANAMA

Tho Tamaroa, which left Auckland for Southampton and London on November 8, left Colon on the afternoon of November 26.

SHIPS TO BE BROKEN UP. I FORMER NEW ZEALAND TRADERS.

Better prices for scrap material account largely for the present sale of a fleet of five large British cargo vessels to foreign shipbreakers. The- ships, which have been laid up for a considerable time, were originally German, and, after being owned by the Hain Steamship Company they came into the control of the Federal Steam Navigation Company, which is engaged in regular services with Australia and New Zealand. The ships are not insulated, and the owners see no further use for them.

The prices paid for the ships are equivalent to slightly more than £1 a ton gross, and represent a doubling of the market price for old tonnage within the last few months. Four of the ships are eighteen or nineteen years old. Particulars of the vessels are as follow: . : Gross Place of Price paid

Totals ... 38,498 £40,500 The Pareora, Puriri, and Papanui have been sold to Japanese shipbreakers and the Papipaki and Pipiriki to Italian breakers. The demand for tonnage for breaking up is now fairly widespread.
