NEWFOUNDLAND

RETURN TO CROWN COLONY STATUS THE GOVERNMENT'S PLANS Press Association—-By Telegraph—Copyright ST. JOHNS (Newfoundland), November 27. Newfoundland’s return to its old status as a Crown colony became virtually assured to-day as tho Government told the Legislature of its plans for giving immediate effect to tho recommendations of tho Royal Commission that investigated the island dominion’s financial and economic position. The Speech from the Throne said that sweeping changes in tho country’s government structure held out the possibility of freedom from unprecedented difficulties. The Prime Minister (Mr F. C. Aiderdice) declared suspension of tho island’s Constitution and substitution by a commission to be in the best interests of tHo country. There was no debate on the proposals, the Legislature adjourning till to-morrow, when the debate will begin. An amendment calling for a week’s adjournment, proposed from the Opposition benches in the Lower House by Mr F. G. Bradley, was defeated.
