BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

DEPRECIATION IN CATTLE VALUES Due to the fat cattle sale being late in finishing on account of the extra number in, the lamb and sheep sales at Burnside to-day were later than usual in starting. - In the cattle pens 354 head were included. There were three trucks of good bullocks forward, but the bulk of the entry was made up of medium quality. The percentage .of cows and heifers was much bigger than at previous sales, and in these classes _ the quality was fairly good. Competition was good at the outse, bu a prices a little below those of last week. The sale followed an irregular course, there being a good deal of variation. Medium cattle were back fully 10s a head throughout the sale, while the drop in heavy cattle did not show the same depreciation until the last race was offered, when values wen back 20s compared with last week’s parity. A special consignment of cattle was offered on account of Mr T. L. Morris, Pukerau, and sold up to £l2 6s, and another from Mr H. Hubber, Lochiel, brought up to £l2 12s 6d; while Mr Campbell’s, Wyndham, truck realised up to £l2. The quality in the lamb penning was good as a whole. Only part of the entry had been sold at the time of going to press. Values were on a par with those of last week, and, on account of a smaller entry, it was almost certain that prices would remain firm. The top price early in the sale was 28s, and it was not considered likely that a higher price would be reached. Almost double the number at last week’s market, some 1,400 fat sheep were sent in. There were some specially fine ewes and wethers forward, and the quality of the remainder was generally good. As the butchers have almost exhausted their supplies, it was anticipated that the sale would _ be keen at values equal to or very little below last week’s.

Fat pigs numbered 120, and stores 130. Tho quality was fair all round, and bacon pigs sold from £1 18s to £2 l;js (3d (equal to 4.td to 3d lb), and porkers brought from £1 Ss to £2 2s Cd (3d to s}d lb). More than the usual number of store cattle filled the pens to-day. Included in the yarding were a line of seventyfive from the north, and several other small Ids from different, didricis.
