' 07AS0 BRANCH In its report, which will lie presented at tlic annual meeting of the Otago brand) of the New Zealand Institute of Architects, the District Committee congratulates the Unemployment Board upon its activities on behalf of the budding trades, and while it recognises the difficulties iu connection with this scheme it must be generally admitted that it has promoted increased activity in the various brandies of the building industry. At the request of the city building surveyor (Mr L. 1). Coombs) a special general meeting of the branch was held to ascertain the opinion of members as to the desirability and soundne of half-brick construction in Dunedin, especially when applied to large two-story buildings. Two further meetings were held to discuss the question, and written opinions were submitted by several members. A motion was finally carried favouring a limitation of tliis construction to buildings one story in height above foundations. Tbe opinion of the brand) was forwarded to the Dunedin City '’’orporation ns requested, end the committee oppressed its appreciation of the action of the city building surveyor in seeking the advice of the brand) in a matter affecting the building by-laws of the city.
