EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING COMMENCED The Education Board commenced its monthly . meeting to-day; present— Messrs D. T. Fleming (in the chair) ? J. Shepherd, W. R. Brugh, G. Livingstone, R. H. Todd, W. Cooper, D. G. Cameron, and P. M'Kinlay. Mr J. W. Preen, a member of the Canterbury Education Board, was welcomed to the meeting. APPLICATIONS FOR SUBSIDIES. The application by the Maori Hill Committee for a subsidy for top-dress-ing asphalt was granted. The architect estimated the cost of material at £3B 12. s 6d. Labour will be provided under the No. 5 scheme.

The Kaikorai Committee’s application for a subsidy towards the tost of purchasing twelve chairs tor the head master’s room for meeting purposes was granted. The Allanton Committee applied for assistance towards the laying down of a tennis court in the school grounds. The architect estimated the cost (material only) as follows:—Asphalt £56 4s 3d, concrete £79. —The application was declined.

A subsidy was granted the Berwick Committee for top-dressing asphalt. Applying for assistance in improving the entrance to the school, the Hindon Committee stated that it had already spent £6, and estimated the cost of completing the work at a further £l2. —The architect to report. The application of Mosgiel for a subsidy lor top-dressing and repairing asphalt, at a total cost of £99 10s, was granted. A subsidy amounting to two-thirds ot the cost of painting the interior of Merton School was granted. The Karitane Committee applied for a subsidy for top-dressing asphalt at the school. The architect estimated the cost of material at £l2 8s 7d, the work to be done under the No. 5 scheme. The cost of material for top-dressing at residence would be £5 9s 7d additional.— The request was granted. ARCHITECT’S RECOMMENDATIONS.

The Waihola head teacher applied for the renovation of residence.—The architect reported that the residence was 090 of the oldest in Otago, having been greeted in the sixties. He estithat the residence could be made reasonably habitable for the sum of about '•£10 10s.—The hoard decided to carry out tlve work. Regarding tthe application of the head teacher at St. Leonards for interior renovation of the residence, the architect reported that certain work was necessary, and the total cost would be £l7 15s.—The work is to be carried out.

Stating that finances did not permit of its finding part of the cost, estimated at £35, the Seacliff Committee applied for the interior painting of the school. The board decided to find two-thirdg of the cost. The teacher at Biackstone Hill reported that there was no proper drainage from the washhouse. t As there was no gully nearby, the architect estimated the cost of taking a pipe lino a distance of 60ft at about £6 6s 6d.—Authority was given to carry out tho work. DAMAGE AT MORNINGTON. The architect reported that during recent rain a small slip occurred on tho Kenmure road frontage of the Monington School, about 36rt of fencing and bank being displaced and pushed out over the footpath. He recommended that the present fence and wood retaining wall be removed and a small Concrete retaining wall erected about 2ft high above the footpath, the bank to be trimmed back to tho level of the playing area and a protecting hand rail erected. The estimated cost was £33. The recommendation was approved, but, before doing tlve work, the board is to consult the Sclvool Committee. GENERAL. A complaint was received from the Warepn Committee that gorsG had been allowed to spread ever the school reserve leased by the Olutha County Council, and that the buildings were also sadly in need of repair.—Tlve_ board approved of the secretary’s action in writing to the County Council. An application by the Mosgiel Committee for the installation of hand basins, the old ones having been condemned, was held over. An invitation was received from Waiwern to attend the seventieth anniversary celebrations from December 29 to December 31. It was referred to the chairman and local members.
