CHRISTIAN BROTHERS' CARNIVAL

J. D. O’DMSGOLL RETAINS CHAMPIONSHIP

A high standard of swimming was shown at the annual carnival of the Christian Brothers’ High School before a' large crowd of spectators at the Municipal Baths last night, and in the senior division the performances would compare favourably with those of the majority of secondary schools in the dominion. The entries for all the championship classes were satisfactory, and, as usual, the handicap events attracted large fields and close finishes. The school championship was retained •by J. D. O’Driscoll, one of Otago’s most promising intermediate swimmers, who lowered his own records in each of the three free-style events. He won the 33 l-3yds in the good tiine of 16 2-ssec (1 4-ssec better than his previous record), the 66 2-3yds championship in 38 4-ssec (four seconds better than the record), and the 100yds in the splendid time of 62 4-osec (9 3-ssec better than the record),, He was second in the diving, and took the championship with 18 points, J. W. Barry being runnerup with 14 points, B. Bennetts totalling 3, and J. O’Connell 1. Barry pushed O’Driscoll all the way in the three races, and he, too, must- have improved on the existing rceords. T. Wallace swam very well to win the under 16 championship, annexing all four events, and totalling 20 points, while M. O’Connell was runner-up with 12, R. Marshall scoring 3, and W. Dvson 1. A promising young swimmer in F. O’Driscoll (a brother of the school champion) won the under 13 championship with 15 points, L, Marshall was runner-up with 9, and M. Hindmarsb third with 3, R. Blair scoring 1. L. Woods won the under 12 championship with 15 points, P. Canter being runner-up with 6, R. Johnston scoring 6, and A.. Marlow 1. . . . During the evening an exhibition of the old style of breast stroke, modern breast stroke, and racing breast stroke was given by Reg. Geddcs, his display being much appreciated by the spectators, as also was the exhibition of diving which lie and P. E. Mathieson provided. J. D. O’Drisooll and J. Blacklock, who were members of the Christian Brothers’ High School life-saving team which won the secondary schools life-saving shield last season, gave an interesting demonstration of the first and fourth methods of rescue. A long programme was got off without the slightest hitch, the organisation reflecting great credit on Brothers Boylan, Ryan, and Brophy, who had the co-operation of officials of the Otago Swimming Centre, Mr W. A. Jenkins (president nf the centre) acting_ as starter, and also declaring the carnival open. In the course of bis remarks he referred to the encouragement given to swimming bv the Christian Brothers High School, and to the high standard that had been attained by the school’s swimmers Results:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. 33 1-3 YARDS, Open.
