(Received November 28, at 11 a.m.) The Minister of Health (Sir Hilton Young) informed the House of Commons that the Exchequer had placed £1,000,000 at his disposal to assist the local authorities in the provision of better water supplies in rural areas. Regarding slum clearance, the Minister said that of 1,717 local authorities who had received a circular requiring the submission of schemes for the total elimination within five years of all slums and the provision of alternative accommodation all but forty-five had now submitted programmes or satisfied him that they were taking action.
