THE STAIRCASE

DECORATION SCHEMES The staircase is an important feature of a house, being the by-pass of all portions of it. The walls of the staircase should depend upon windows and upon their colouring for their decoration, and not be crowded with pictures for which there is no room elsewhere in the house. Staircase windows are improved by the addition of paper transparencies or net curtains in orange, yellow, or peach shades, which will cast a warm glow upon the staircase.

White paint is unpleasant on staircases, because it looks cold and uncomfortable. Deep ivory, cream, or stone colour are much pleasanter, and give a mellow appearance of warmth and comfort. The colour of the walls should lie light, and will, of course, continue the scheme of the hall. Nowadays they are usually distempered, but a glossy naint. while constituting a greater outlay at first, can be washed down year after year, ft is also > brighter in appearance and reflects light better than the dull surface of distemper.' Stair carpet should maintain the colour scheme started in the hall, and link up with the colour of the mats outside the landing doors.
