WATER POLO

SATURDAY'S MATCHES The first series of matches in the A and B grade competitions at water polo were completed at the Municipal Baths on Saturday night, Dunedin A (the champion team of the last three years) defeating St. Clair A by six goals to one in the A grade and St. Clair B beating- Dunedin C by four goals to nil in the B grade. There was a good attendance of spectators. A Grade. The game between Dunedin A and St. Clair A was played at a great pace for the first three minutes when Newall received the ball from S. Jarvis at his own four-yard line and, outpaced M‘Kenzie to open the score for Dunedin. After good passing in the forward line S. Jarvis scored for- Dunedin, and half-time was sounded with the score-; Dunedin A 2, St. Clair A 0. Within thirty minutes of the resumption of the second spell, S. Jarvis secured the ball and swam up to pass to Byrnes who fooled the opposition to score the best goal of the game. Byrnes netted the next goal with a good backhand shot, and then W. J. Jarvis scored St. Clair’s only goal with a long shot. Dunedin A 4, St. Clair A 1. S. Jarvis shot another goal, and from a corner throw, Byrnes also netted, a good game ending : Dunedm A 6, St. Clair A 1. The teams were; Dunedin A—P. W. Harkess, D. Nowall, J. O’Driscoll, B. Kerr, J. 0. Byrnes, S. Jarvis, and R. J. Fleming. St. Clair A—J. Swan, J. Faulks, C. Durand, A- Harrod, S. M'Kenzie, W. J. Jarvis, and H. D. Gillies. Mr D. C. Bannatyne was the referee. B Grade. St. Clair B beat Dunedin C in the curtain-raiser to the big game by four goals to nil, the winners handling the hall better than their 'opponents. For Dunedin, Johnson, in goal, made some brilliant saves, and Williams and Rix played good games. Durand, M‘Allen,, and Gladwin were the best St. Clair players. For St. Clair, M’Allen scored three goals and Gladwin one. The teams were:—St. Clair B—H. Tyrie, W. M'Allcn, Y. Aldous, J. Durand, C. Gore, H. Lewis, and C. Gladwin. Dunedin C—R. 0. Johnson, A. M.
