OBITUARY
MR JDHN LOMAS A former secretary of the Depart' ment'of Labour and officer in chargo of the Labour Department, Christchurch, Mr John Lomas, died yesterday, aged 85 years. Mr Lomas in his younger days was prominently connected with the West Coast Miners’ Union < and latterly was well known as a local preacher of the Methodist Church, Born in England, Mr Lomas came to New Zealand at an early age, and found employment as a coal miner on the West Coast, thus following his father’s occupation. Later he became secretary of the West Coast Miners’ Union, holding the post for many year?.' When the Seddon Government was m office Mr Lomas secured employment with the Labour Department as an inspector of factories. For several years from 1896 he was in charge of the Labour Department at Christchurch. Ho was also the officer in charge at Dunedin for a short time in 1906. from there he was transferred to Wellington, where he became secretary to the department, a post from which he re-, tired in 1916. While Mr Lomas was in charge of the department in Christchurch he sferved oh the Government commission set up to inquire into the mining industry ou the West Coast.' He also gave the present officer -m charge of the department, Mr R. (Received November 17, at 10.30 a.in.)’ The death is announced of Sir Drummond Chaplin. [Sir Drummond Chaplin was born in 1866. He was admitted as a barrister at Lincoln’s Inn in 1891. From 1897 to 1898 he acted as correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ at Johannesburg, and for the ‘ Morning Post ’ at St. Petersburg from 1899 to 1900. He was manager at Johannesburg for the Consolidated Goldfields of South Africa Ltd. from 1900 to 1914. He was a member of the Transvaal Legislative Assembly from 1907 to 1910, member of the House of Assembly of the Union of South Africa from 1910 to 1914, and from 1924 to 1929. He was Administrator of Southern Rhodesia from 1914 to 1923, and Northern Rhodesia from 1921 to 1923. J MR A. H. JARVIS FORMER TEST CRICKETER. He was a fine wicket, keeper in his day. He was 73 years of age. _
