‘NEW ZEALAND HERALD'
This morning’s mail brought to Dunedin copies of the ‘ New Zealand Herald ’ issue on Monday of this week. With its supplement it consists of eighty-six pages of matter that has been carefully compiled from the his- ' tory of the seventy years that have elapsed since the ‘ Herald ’ was born. In 1863, the year of the birth, Auckland was the seat of Government, and without question the finest city in the land, and as such its history is in large degree the history of New Zealand. The ‘Herald’ has in this issue paid duo heed tp that fact, and so schemed its celebration articles as to make them interesting to persons who lived their young days in Auckland and have since settled in other parts. Some day, perhaps, the ‘ Herald ’ may enlarge upon the doings in the very early days and give more of the intimate details of such events as the founding of the paper, the preparations to defend the city when in General Cameron’s time all males between the ages of 16 and 60 were called out for militia service, the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh, and so on. In the meantime the special ii-sue is of abiding interest. The illustrations are good, some of the portraits remarkably true, as, for instance, that of the. founder, ■ Air William Chisholm Wilson —a Scot of the very best typo..
