TENNIS CHAMPIONS

MATCHES IH MEM It is some considerable time since Dunedin was favoured by the visit of such world-renowned players as will ba playing at Logan Park nest week. On Monday (Labour Day) the Australian Davis Cup players D. P. Turnbull and A. Quist will play matches against N* Wilson and 6. A. Pearce, two prominent New Zealand players. Tho matches will consist of two singles of three sets each and one doubles of five sets. The doings of Messrs Turnbull and Quist in the recent Davis Cup matches will be fresh in the memory of lawn tennis followers. In the French championships Quist and M'Grath reached the finals of the doubles by. defeating Borotra and Brugnou. in the Wimbledon championship Turnbull and Quist defeated Vines and Gledhill (U.S.A.), and again in the American championships. It will thus be seen, that these two players are in the first flight. On Wednesday, October 25, at Logan Park, the English players who are visiting Dunedin will play matches against C. E. Malfroy, N. Wilson, and G. A.Pearce. The English team is headed by, F. J. Perry, the world’s second ranked player, who has victories during the past few months to his credit over all the leading players, including Crawford, the world’s No. 1 player. Perry defeated Crawford in the final of the American championships; after being down two' sets to one ho took the remaining two sets for the loss of only one game. Perry was also mainly responsible for Great Britain's victory in the Davis Cup contest. In the final against France he defeated Cochet in a hard five-set match, and in the deciding match of tho contest he accounted for Merlin by three sets to one.H. G. N. Loo, the second member of tho English team, is ranked No. 3 hi Great Britain, and has victories to his credit over Lacoste and Borotra, and has represented Great Britain in Davis Cup matches since 1930. F. H. D, Wilde, the other member of the team, is only 22 years of age, but he has a number of excellent performances already to his credit. Tho public can therefore look forward to witnessing some high-class lawn tennis at tho Logan Park courts on Monday and Wednesday of next week. The local association has gone to considerable expense in providing seating accommodation, and every effort will be made ta keep the spectators well informed r» to the progress of .the various games. The box plan for these matches is now open at the Otago Sports Depot.
