POST OFFICE CONTRACT

UNEMPLOYMENT FUND SUBSIDY P. AMD T. DEPARTMENT TO GET LUMP SUM [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, October 10. Though tho successful contractor for tho Dunedin Dost Office was not prepared to restrict the hours of working so as to secure tho Unemployment Board's subsidy on wages unless he was paid £2,500 more for the contract, the Rost and Telegraph Department, as owner of the building, is going to get some advantage from the Unemployment Fund. The object of the special building subsidy under tho No, 10 scheme was to encourage the spending of capital on buildings, and this principle is being observed by granting a lump sum as subsidy on the Dunedin Post Office contract. The amount bears close relation to the total estimated expenditure on wages for the whole job, and should work out at about 8 per cent, of the gross amount of the tender.

A similar method is being followed in connection with the Wellington railway station contract, tho tenders for which were opened last week and are now under consideration by tho Railway Department, which will receive from tho Unemployment Fund a lump sum in payment, bascd_ on the gross outlay on the building, probably totalling 8 per cent, of that amount.
