SPORT OF RACING

SOOTH CANTERBURY J.C. CHRYSOLOGY WINS CUP KERBSIDE OUTSTRIPS FIELD. The weather at Timaru was brilliantly line, and there was a large attendance when the Spring Meeting was held on the Washdykc course, including a number of visitors from Dunedin and North Otago. The district is badly in teed of rain, and the course was fast and dusty. The fields were the largest seen in the South. Island since the National Meeting last August, and the racing interesting. The Timaru Cup attracted a field of ten, nine of which are engaged in the New Zealand Cup, and the winner turned up in the locally-owned Chrysology, wno was allowed to return his backers quite a false price, considering the consistently good form he has shown during the past four weeks. The field he beat included the well-fancied Rebel Song and Tout le Monde,, and as he will meet them on much better terms in the big race next November Chrysol«gy will now come into the calculations for the New Zealand Cup. He has now won on heavy and hard and fast tracks over a mile and a-quarter, and improving with each race he gets. The* open sprint race also came to a Dunedin owner. Kerbside, carrying a very luxuriant weight, 7st 41b, raced right up to her best form of last year, and won the Flying Handicap well in the fast time of Imin 12 l-ssec, a performance that will bring her into the limelight at Trentham this week. The totalisators. handled £4,104 10s on the win and £4,474 10s on the place machines, making.a total of £8,579, as compared with £8,244 at the corresponding meeting last season.
