COMMERCE STUDENTS' DEBATE

DUNEDIH OR PORT CHALMERS ? “ That the Otago Harbour Board should abandon the port of Dunedin,; and concentrate solely on Port Chalmers,” was the subject of a debate which took place at the University, Club last night between teams representing the Otago University Commerce Faculty Debating Society and the University Commerce Faculty Ex-students’ Association. The affirmative side of the debate was taken by, Messrs G. S. Kirby (leader), W. R.i Brown, and Ralph Malcolm (ex-stu-dent), and the negative argument was in the hands of Messrs A. R. Cameron (leader), P. Wellington, and R. Guthrie (present student). The president of the Commerce Faculty Debating Society (Mr F. M. Satterthwaite) was in the chair and the judge was Mr C. B, Barrowclough, who awarded - the decision to the ex-students who had taken the affirmative. Some interesting and novel points were advanced by several of the speakers; but generally the argument was based on the lines usually taken when this much-discussed coni troversy has been under discussion. A ! vote of thanks was accorded the judge and the speakers. ,
