A LONG, LONG TRAIL
CARS WILL PASS CAMELS PEKING, September 12. The oldest and longest caravan route in the world—the silk track between China and Rome—will soon hear the “ honking ” of motor cars rushing past the old-fashioned camels. The Nanking Government has appointed the famous Swedish explorer, Dr Sven Hedin, who is resident at Peking, leader of a small Sino-Swedish expedition, which will leave Kueishua by motor next month to survey two motor highways intended to develop trade between the remote interior and the coast. Besides traversing the silk route across the Mongolian desert, the party will survey the Imperial road through the province of Kansu, returning direct to Nanking after eight months in the field. The highways when completed will be each 2,000 miles long.
