Forecast: Moderate, hut freshening, westerly winds; weather mainly fair, but some showers likely, chiefly on the coast; temperatures milder; seas rather rough. ARRlVED.— September 21. Wingatui, s.s. (7 p.m.), 2,378 tons, Lowe, from Auckland via ports. —September 22;Holmglen, m.s.' (0.25 a.m.), 432 tons, Mead, from Port Waikato via ports. SAILED. —September 21. Port Waikato, m.s. (5 p.m.), 669 tons. Watchlin, for Bluff. The Wingatui arrived from Auckland via ports and is to sail to-morrow morning for Wellington and Auckland, via Oamaru, Timaru, and Lyttelton. The Opihi is to leave New Plymouth to-night for Dunedin direct. She is due on Sunday night and will sail on Monday for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Nelson, and New Plymouth. . The Titoki is to leave Gisborne to-day for Dunedin. Due on Monday morning, she will sail on Tuesday for Tauranga via Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne. The Port Waikato, which came in on Wednesday, sailed yesterday afternoon for Bluff. Returning to Dunedin tomorrow, she will sail later in the day for Tauranga, Auckland, Whangarei, via Timaru, and Lyttelton. Tho Waipiata is scheduled to leave Auckland to-day for Dunedin and Bluff, via Wellington and Lyttelton. She is due on Wednesday and will sail the same day for Bluff, returning to load out and sail again the following Saturday for Auckland. The Holmglen arrived early this morning from her northern ports and is to sail this evening for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Wanganui, New Plymouth, and Waikato. The British tanker Eclipse is reported to have cleared Palembang, Java, on September 3, with bulk petrol for the Atlantic Union Company for discharge at Sydney, Melbourne, Wellington, and Auckland. Advice has been, received that the Danish motor ship Victoria left Nauru Island on September 11 with 8,000 tons of phosphates for discharge at Lyttelton and Auckland. The vessel is due at Lyttelton on Saturday. She will unload about 2,200 tons at Lyttelton and the remainder of tho cargo at Auckland. THE FERRY SERVICE. Tho ferry steamer Maori from Wellington arrived at Lyttelton at 7.50 a.m. to-day. Passengers and mail for the south connected with the express. NARBADA ON TUESDAY. The Union Company’s Indian Trader, Narbada, was to leave Lyttelton to-day for Timaru and Dunedin. She is due on Tuesday, and will probably sail about Thursday for the East via Bluff and Newcastle. WAINUI’S PORTS. The Union Company’s Wainui is scheduled to leave Melbourne on Wednesday for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Wellington. She is due at this port on October 3. FATE OP THE TARAWERA. I.lr Hans Nilsen, of tho Neck, Stewart Island, received word last mail from the Marine Department that the sunken steamer Tarawera is now his property, reports the Stewart Island correspondent of the ‘ Southland Daily News.’ The Tarawera is in quite shallow water, so that the greater portion is clear from the sea. There is considerable value in the gear left on board, such as hand winches, doors, and iron work of all description. The deck also is of solid teak, and there is about sixty tons of fine coal, but mostly covered with sea water. During a recent heavy wind the effect ol tho sunken ship as a breakwater was very apparent. Mr Nilsen’s launch now lying in smooth water protected by tho big ship.

The motor ship Taranaki, which , arrived' at Sydney on September 9 from London, made the run from London to -Fremantle in 26 days 10h 41min, from pilot to pilot, averaging 15 knots for the greater part of the run. This is better than her previous trip, being eight hours quicker. After discharge of her inward cargo at the Queensland ports, she will start to load wool and general cargo for the United Kingdom and Continent, sailing from Sydney on October 4. WAIRUNA TO CALL AT NUKUALOFA. . The Union Company advises that tho Wairuna is to leave Vancouver on October 4, San Francisco on October 10, and Los Angeles on October 12, for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff, and Australia, via Nukualofa. The vessel is scheduled to reach Nukualofa on October 31 and Auckland about November 5. . MARAMA’S TRANSHIPMENTS. Transhipments from the following vessels were included in the cargo of the Marama, which arrived at Wellington on Tuesday morning from Sydney:—Cardross, Kyokkoh Maru, Parakoola, Talleyrand, Cathay; Orungal, Kowarra, Nellore, Port Fremantle, Bendigo, Strathaird, Katoomba,, Tasman, Orama, Changte, Ormiston, Bitterfield, Commisaire Ramel, Mqreton Bay, Baradine, Kitano Maru, Time. OBITUARY. Captain James Green, a former master in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand Ltd., died in a private hospital at Wellington on Monday. Captain Green was born at Manning River, New South Wales, on October 13, 1884, and at an early age went to sea in sailing ships. After serving his time he obtained iiis second mate’s certificate at Sydney in November, 1909. He joined the Union Steam Ship Company’s employ on January 17, 1910, as fourth officer of the R.M.S. Makura, and Later transferred to the Warrimoo in a similar capacity. Ho was promoted third officer of the Monra in April 1910, serving in a similar capacity in the Koromiko before being appointed second officer of the Squall in November, 1911, afterwards transferring to the Kauri, Koromiko, and Karitane. In May, 1915, he was appointed acting chief officer of the Tofua and was later confirmed in tho rank and transferred to the Karori; he also served in that capacity in the Wanaka, Tarawera, Pateena, Mararoa (for more than three years), Waitomo, Moeraki, and Maori. Captain Green, was appointed master on March 2, 1923, his first command being the Rakanoa, and he subsequently held command of the following Union Steam Ship Company vessels;— Corinna, Kaimanawa, Koromiko, Kaitangata, Ngahere (wrecked Grey bar, May 12, 1924). Kamona, Kaiapoi, Kaikorai, VVaipahi, Kaponga, Wingatui, Karori, Kanna, and Opihi. He resinned from tho service on October 5. 1927. THE WANGANELLA. DOCKED FOR REPAIRS.
