WHIPPET NOTES
[Dy Remind ]
The recent performance of F. Algie’s champion whippet, ’ Tasman Flight, stamps him_ as a dog above the average. His win in the principal race last Saturday was a treat to see. Although giving away yards to the rest of the field, he soon gathered, up the opposition and .won comfortably. Tasman Flight is the winner of seven cups, and must be the oldest whippet racing. He is also sire of the hurdle winner, and grand sire of the runner-up in the extended Nursery Handicap, Colin Johnston had Witch Doctor in rare fettle, and his second in the open Hat was a great effort for a young dog. Mrs Algie’s good dog, First Flight, went a great race in the hurdles, although Mrs A. Hensleigh’s Imatea Girl made the sou of Tasman Flight hurry to the. judge. W. Veitch’s Border Queen is the goods, and is sure to continue winning. She was produced in perfect condition and finished on well. Jim Dougins had The Jester looking a picture, and it was a surprise to all to see the son of SnowfallBonny Mary run such a poor race. The puppy. Happy Hours, from the same kennel, was unlucky to strike such a good performer as Mrs Turner’s Silver loin. The latter, after whining the .extended Nursery, carried on and won the Juvenile in convincing fashion. Silver, Tom is undoubtedly in a class of his own as a puppy. The two most improved whippets are T. O’Driscoll’s Wild Night, winner of the Maiden, and W. Cumberbeach’s Whistling Wind. Both will be hard to beat in light weight company. : The Nursery race was keenly contested. but C. R. Unwin’s puppy,. Hermit. carried too many guns for Joy and Lexie P.rice’s Petal Pine, although the latter puppy had to give away age and weight. These two saplings show great promise, and should reach top company. The club has a real live wire in George Kernp, ivho, by the way, has taken over Scotland’s Best. " When in the mood, Scotty is one of our best light weights and in the capable hands of George, no doubt the daughter of Captain Doon—Bonny Mary will soon figure on the winning list. Bill Guthrie has purchased from E. G. Price that clinking little slut Philopoena. The daughter o* : Pine Picture—Reta Rose, like her sire and dam, is a wonderful hurdler; Mrs R. Johnston’s good little dog. King Billie, ran a fine race, and is sure to salute the judge soom. One of the promising hurdlers seen in Dunedin is Jack- Goodman’s Erin’s Star, After making a faulty jump at tht first hurdle, she soon recovered and was going great guns to the judge. Secretary A. Hensleigh has a shapely and ■well-educated sapling in Hushaby, by Pine Picture—lmatea _ Girl. This pup is bred on winning lines, as also is Mr H. Mouritney’s pup from the same litter.
