SUCCESSFUL SWIMMING CARNIVAL
OFFICIAL OPENING OF Y.M.C.A. BATHS KEEN COMPETITION PROVIDED The official opening ceremony of the recently renovated Y.M.C.A. Baths was celebrated last night by a most successful mterclnb demonstration swimming carnival, which was conducted by special permission of the Otago Swimming Centre, the general* arrangements for the meeting being very well carried out by the newly-formed Zenith Club, which lias made a happy entry into Otago swimming. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr J. M'Ara (vice-president of the Y.M.C.A.), who, on behalf 6 f the board of directors, said that he was very pleased to see the baths once again in commission. A few years ago, owing to straitened circumstances, they felt compelled to close them down, and it was a matter for regret that they had not been available to the general public, and more particularly to their own members. The fact that the baths were now being opened again was duo in a large measure to the Zenith Club, which had approached the Y.M.C.A. and offered their support in every possible way if it would consider the reopening of the baths. The directors had gone into the matter fully, with the result that the baths were now being reopened. The speaker paid a tribute to Mr W. H. Buckland, and to members of the Zenith Club, who were almost entirely responsible for the renovation of the baths and putting them into their present fine condition at practically no cost to the association. Thanks were duo also to Mr, Dickie, one of the association members, who had assisted Mr Buckland in this connection He hoped the fraternity would welcome this additional accommodation, for there was room for two baths in a city the size of Dun-
edin. In conclusion, Mr M‘Ara thanked the Otago Swimming Centre for the assistance it had given, and also affiliated clubs.
An interesting programme of events was put through, and the first appearance of the Zenith Club in interclub events was marked by keen but friendly competition. The first Zenith swimmer to register a straight-out win was the New Zealand junior girls’ breast-stroke champion, Miss Q. Buckland, who swam a good race to win the 50yds breaststroke event, while another promising member of the new club, G. Field (a newcomer from Ashburton), deadheated for first place in the 50yds interclub event with G. Ruston, of the Dunedin Club. In his heat Field returned the good time of 27 2-ssec. The junior 20vds was won by the promising Kiwi swimmer, C. M‘Gregor, and the ladies’ 50yds by Miss G. Rix, of the Dunedin Club. The life-saving event went to Reg. Geddes (Kiwi) cud B. Isaacs (St. Clair), and the intercluh diving to N. Williams (Dunedin). As usual, the intercluh relay provided exciting racing, Kiwi No, 1 team winning from thb 6scc mark. A pleasing feature of the evening was the exhibition of breast-stroke given by the New Zealand intermediate champion and record-holder, Reg Geddes ; Th© organisation was a credit to tne secretary of the Y.M.C.A. (Mr J. H. Don Miller), and the secretary of the Zenith Club (Mr Don Harvey). Results: — 20 YARDS JUNIOR BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ INTERCLUB HANDICAP. First heat: Miss C. Knowles (2seel 1, M. E.
