CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD

MEN SENT TO PRISON Remarkable stories of a treasure ship said to bo lying in London docks and a box containing diamonds were told at the Old Bailey in July, when David Bazyler, aged 25, and Berek Kochman, aged 34, both described as tailors, were charged with conspiring to obtain and attempting to obtain money by false pretences. ' ... Prosecuting counsel stated that Bazyler saw a Mrs Margolin about a room she had to let. Kochman joined him and produced a box, which he partially opened. Bazyler remarked; (( They are real diamonds. 1 * He took a real diamond from the box and, with Mrs Margolin, went to a jeweller, who valued the stone at £7O. # Mrs Margolin was then induced to give Bazyler £9l to buy the diamonds from Kochman. The men left, and when the box was opened it was found to contain crystals valued at 6d each. Some months later the two men went to the shop of Mr Samuel Green, jeweller, showed him some sovereigns, and asked if ho would buy 2,500 gold coins at 23s each. Mr Green said ho would go up to £IO,OOO and work on a commission basis. Bazyler, added counsel, said the gold was in a ship at London docks, and Mr Green agreed to take the men there in his car. On the way he became suspicious, and the two men were arrested. The men, who were stated to be Polish citizens, were each sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard _ labour and recommended for deportation.
