TRANSHIPMENT OF BOILER. The ticklish job of shifting the fortyton boiler from the Waikouaiti to the scow Ngahau, for transport to Christchurch via the estuary at Sumner, was accomplished without a hitch at Lyttelton on Wednesday morning. Slings of sin wire hawser were employed by the floating crane Rapaki, which hoisted the boiler from the Waikouaiti on to the Gladstone pier, and thence to the waiting Ngahau, which had undergone special structural alterations to accommodate its unwieldy load. The work of placing the wire slings around the boiler entailed more work than a layman would appreciate, for heavy blocks had to be handled, and great care had to be exercised that the stiff and heavy wire rope did not slip on to the men. The work had to be carried out slowly to eliminate the element .of risk. The boiler rested nicely between the coamings and the work appeared simple to the onlookers. The work of getting the boiler aboard the Ngahau was slow, but was safely carried out, and the boiler was in position for the last stage of its travels shortly before 2 o’clock.
