SHAG POINT MINERS
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER REQUEST FOR RELIEF WORK [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September G. A deputation representing a number of miners formerly engaged at the Shag Point mine, who had been refused relief work following a strike at the mine, waited on the Hon. A. Hamilton requesting that relief work be made available to the 'men. The Minister undertook to investigate the position. It was mentioned that the company had closed the mine, and on August 1 the thirty miners affected had registered as unemployed. They had been refused work by the local Unemployment Committee, and in addition the manager of the mine had said that the miners who had gone on strike would never receive employment again at the mine, all of which practically meant sentence to death by starvation.
